Exhibition: Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up

A savage rebel, a concentrated bundle of energy, a mythical legend, a dedicated suffragette, a peace activist, a convinced communist ... many descriptions of Frida Kahlo are true, but above all she is the most talented and important Mexican painter of the 20th century and has a unique position in Latin American Art History.

With her strong, almost grown eyebrows, her love for Mexican costumes, elaborate hairstyles and Indian jewelry, Frida Kahlo was a striking phenomenon. In many self-portraits she put herself in the spotlight and accentuated her inner emotional storms. With her pictures she presented an artistic image of her passion story. She addressed her ruined body and failed faithfulness to Diego Rivera, birth and death, sexuality and violence, in a merciless self-revelation. An emotionality and directness that moves. Famous was the double self-portrait "The two Fridas", on which she presented herself with her heart cut out. But also illustrations of animals and plants, mystical and religious motifs, influenced by Mexican folk art, staged talented in her paintings. Frida Kahlo devoted herself to a symbolic, surreal imagery.

Only after her death her paintings did make her the most famous painter in Mexico, if not also in Latin America. In the 1980s Kahlo's works suddenly seemed to conform to the international time spirit. She became the feminist icon of cultural and art history. Exhibitions and books about her art and her tragic life are crowd pullers worldwide.

Hardly any artist has worked so intensively with his or her inner self and stylized as consciously to the living legend as she did The London Victoria and Albert Museum is now showing private personalities out of the life of the Mexican painter.
