Exhibition: Sarah Sze at Gagosian Gallery
Sarah Sze is an American sculptor and installation artist born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA in 1969. Sarah, who has Chinese ancestry, attended the Milton Academy in Massachusetts until 1987. In 1991 she graduated from Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts. A few years later, she became a Master of Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
The New York artist is known for her mostly expansive and detailed installations. Her works, which are always designed for the location of their respective exhibition, usually consist of a huge variety of cheap and everyday things. However, these are by no means random but have been selected with great precision due to their formal or even ambiguous qualities.
Her works form open universes of encyclopaedic-archeological diversity. They are of the precision of architectural constructions, have the formal and color subtlety of painterly compositions, and exhibit the moving-spatial quality of multi-faceted sculptures, adding an almost musical dimension to the spatial-temporal unfolding of each viewer's individual perception. To this end, Sarah Sze orchestrates a wealth of details on complex individual motifs, on visual melodies and counter-movements, on formal counterpoints and on an overall composition of aerial monumentality. The artist thus creates visual landscapes of an abstract nature, which, inspired by the Japanese-Chinese horticultural art, are structured in a completely non-hierarchical way and yet offer the view of leadership and staging.
Now her new works are presented in the Gagosian Gallery in Rome. This is Sze’s first gallery exhibition in Italy, after her participation in the Biennale di Venezia in 2013 (Triple Point, US Pavilion) and 2015.
