Experience Exclusive Hospitality in Cordes-sur-Ciel
When thinking of France, there are numeorus things coming to your mind at first, right? Probably red wine, Paris and its trademark the Eiffel tower, elegance… maybe fashion and art? All this is typically French in our eyes, but there are a few places in France that might not be between the first things we think of – even though they should be.
Even though Paris is beautiful and most definitely worth a visit, there are many more places in France to see and enjoy, and to absorb its beauty to use it as inspiration. The South-West of France offers wonderful views and magnificent versatility to spend your holidays. If you want to enjoy sand under your feet at the beach, marvel at historical buildings, spend your money on a shopping-trip, enjoy culinary specialities, go on a hike with memorable views or even get an adrenaline push while being on a canoe trip – there are possibilities for everyone! And for that the region where river Tarn flows is just perfect.
There are many ways to explore the gorges of Tarn. You can go by car, the motorbike, the bike, by foot… or by kayak or canoe on the water. Next to impressive rock walls that surpass the emerald shining water, there are unique little towns with picturesque sights such as medieval architectures and bridges, castles and palaces. Especially lovers of pristine nature and characteristic architectural heritage come to their treasures.
Talking of medieval sights: Have you heard of the small place Cordes-sur-Ciel? The Southern French municipality is located on a hill in a height of 150m and has maintained its medieval looking appearance. Numerous buildings in Cordes are considered Monuments historiques, therefore put on a preservation order. “Sur-Ciel” can be translated as “at the sky” which probably implemented because of the town’s look in autumn, when it is foggy around the rivers. Then it looks like Cordes is the only village far and wide, built on a sea of clouds, floating above them. Imagine the picturesque view and imagine capturing it in your own artwork!
Interested in visiting now? A wonderful option for accommodation might be the “St. Jean Retreat” at the foot of Cordes-sur-Ciel. The owners took an old ruin that, in the Middle Ages, served as a hospital, and turned it first into a home and now into a comfortable welcoming retreat for clients that are looking for somewhere different, somewhere welcoming and somewhere that feels like they’ve loved it all their lives. It provides spacious, comfortable and above all else homely peace and tranquillity.
St. Jean has nine rooms, either en-suite or with dedicated private bathrooms. There is an outdoor swimming pool surrounded by mature shrubs and plants, and the grounds include a tennis court, a 10th century chapel, a dedicated yoga studio and an outdoor wellness platform that is not only perfect for yoga or other activities of that kind, but painting as well. Although there are numerous possibilities to capture your creativity in your artworks outdoors, there is an option of staying indoors and paint in the studio. Three meals a day which are made of locally produced organic food are offered, including wine – you are in France after all!
The train ride from Toulouse airport to Cordes-Vindrac takes roughly an hour and from Cordes-Vindrac station it is a 5-minutes drive to St. Jean. The owners are happy to pick you up from the station at no extra costs, but there is also the option of organising a direct airport pick up (and drop-off). This will be charged extra.
