Photo Tour La Palma
17.01.2020 - 24.01.2020 La Palma | Charles Borsboom photography, landscape 1599 EUR
La Palma is a non-touristic volcanic island in the Canaries archipelago, also known as ‘the steepest island in the world’. It is in fact a high mountain of ‘lava’ that rices straight from the ocean. But above all it is a place that offers endless photographic possibilities! The special dragon trees in the north and the big black lava fields and salt production in the south. The coasts, the ocean and the skies are spectacular. As a bonus, La Palma has just about the perfect climate.
Like the other countries of the Canary Islands, La Palma is formed by volcanism. This started about 3 million years ago and the last eruption of the volcano Teneguia located in the south dates back to 1971. In the north is the Caldera de Taburiente, an explosion crater with a diameter of approximately 9 kilometres and a top of over 2400 meters. To the south there are numerous other, smaller and accessible volcanoes.
The island is only 40 km long and 24 km wide, but due to the winding roads it takes time to travel. Our accommodation will be in the south, but we will visit the north for a day as well. Most photo locations are south of the main caldera. The south of La Palma is characterized by improved accessibility and a more visible presence of recent volcanism. There are large lava fields that are almost barren, beautiful small black beaches with huge waves smashing on the beautiful coasts, volcanoes, lava, sand dunes and the very beautiful and photogenic salt fields in Salinas de Fuencaliente on the southern most tip. And, of course, dependent on the weather, the phenomenon of cloud waterfalls. The clouds roll as a kind of waterfall over the ridge of the caldera. Both landscape photographers and enthusiasts of macro photography La Palma offers plenty of challenges.
La Palma has a clear sky. Even so clear that a large international observatory centre is built on the edge of the caldera in El Roque de Los Muchachos. More than 100 scientific instruments are scattered in the area to observe the universe. Ranging from one of the largest mirror telescopes in the world to all sorts of smaller instruments and domes.
Also in the south there are several places that offer great opportunities for watching the stars. Learning how to make a star trail definitely belongs to the possibilities.
Photographer Charles Borsboom guides this wonderful photo tour. The landscapes on La Palma are offering opportunities in both colour- and black and white photography. Charles will help you to determine how the picture will look in black and white. That way, you also learn to visualize a landscape in shades of grey and structures. The conversion to monochrome is done on the computer. Besides photography skills, Charles also pays much attention to photo discussions and post processing of the images. We therefore advise you to bring your own laptop during this tour.
Accommodation
We will be staying at a large Finca where we will have several apartments. All participants will have a single room in the apartment, but will share the facilities (bathroom/toilet) with one or two other group members.
Breakfast will be made in the biggest apartment (no shopping required) and you can make your own lunch package daily. Dinner isn’t included, since Charles wants to be flexible when travelling around the island.
